As the baby now man born out of incest wept, so were some of the individuals born from similar circumstance through a raped mother worst still gang raped mother that would rather keep quiet instead of exposing herself to further ridicule, an abusive father, a father that would shamelessly sleep with the daughter. The list is endless.
I need for us to rob minds together on this. I have heard from some quarters that this is not common in Africa. Is it not common or is it hiding cos of family honour?
If you are a child born in this unusual circumstance, what would you do?
If you know someone that was born through siblings sleeping together, father impregnating the daughter, daughter in-law to father-in- law or son-in-law to mother-in-law, how would you treat such a person?

Because of the shame associated with incest, I'm not sure anyone would admit to being the product of it. Thankfully, I don't know anyone who has had experiences like that but sexual abuse by family members I'm all too familiar with.

ReplyDeleteAn interesting topic. I think incest is pretty common in all societies. Some choose to keep it quiet, some dont. Sexual abuse by family members - you hear stories - but they just remain stories. Like abbie said, you may struggle to get responses on this one.
ReplyDeleteAnd back to your question: If I was the product of incest, I will celebrate my life but maybe not how I became alive. Its easier to say if one isnt a product of incest.
Stuff like this happens everywhere n 9ja is not exempted. But people would rather keep quiet about it,cos of the shame n pain associated with it.
ReplyDeleteI really do not think the circumstances of ones birth should define who we are. No 1 should accept being refered to as a mistake or a child of incest. Cos no1 is a mistake.
There is a greater meaning to every1z life.
The truth of the matter is that such evil happens. We can only thank God that we are not a party to it and hopefully, know nobody that is.
ReplyDeleteBut that being said, the key is ultimately what you are doing, forcing us to at least think about it and consider doing the right thing when the time comes. In this case, it would be stopping/preventing the abuse or assisting/empowering the victims.
Thanks for raising this topic. I know around this time last year, rape/abuse was a serious topic that Nigerian bloggers dealt with. It just might be time to start addressing issues of incest and other forms of violence against women and children again.
