Powerlessness is a mindset that was born out of maltreatment, losing confidence and hope in the face of adversities beyond one’s imaginations, feeling of hopelessness because one has being disappointed too many times before especially by our leaders.
I will like to borrow this saying which goes thus… “When a goat has being chased to a corner where she sees no escape, she turns back and attacks her chaser”. No matter how powerless one feels at first there is always a time of awakening where “I can’t take this anymore” will be the only genuine thought that echoes in one’s mind.
The young people of today in our Nation, a group where I so belong, have a lot of advantages at their disposal to enthrone a democratic order that works for the majority because:
- our past experiences which is more of “ what has not worked in
- we are in the majority because majority of the people are in the same shoes of powerlessness and hopelessness and we have to take charge
- we have great mentors such as Pat Utomi, Dora Akunyili that have influenced our world and our perceptions about how things should be
- Our potentials must not go to waste
What will further help the young people of our great nation to bring about democratic order that works are our common interest, our passion for change, directing our anger and powerlessness to a good course and the encouragement of those in the majority that are trying to make a change via their voices and relentless effort in seeing a better Nigeria
P:S: This short essay was submitted to Pat Utomi's facebook group sometime last year. As a result of contributing this essay, I was supposed to have a lunch date with Pat Utomi with other winners but the lunch is yet to happen.
You have just made me believe Ive got what it takes to make a change...Simply knowing that we are the majority makes a huge difference.
ReplyDeleteOh dearie. This is really so inspiring. I like the part where you speak about making positive use of the darker moments in our lives. Putting anger to good use. Instead of lurking in dark corners and waiting for who to rob how about changing things for a difference.

This powerlessness issue is one that we must continue to address. The psychology of our nation, when it comes to certain things, is not in a good place.

ReplyDeleteI remember the Min for Information in Indonesia saying back around 1990 that education is not a right but a privilege.
Amazing, considering that the old bugger started his career at uni during the Indonesian revolution in 66 when Suharto took the place of Sukarno.
Mind you, I'm not sure if mass votes every 5 years give voters that much power if it's the same old people standing again and again.

ReplyDeleteVery inspiring. It is so unfortunate that as agile as we are,we are powerless. We can bring an end to this state of powerlessness by uniting with one another to fight minority political cabals who only want to keep the status quo. Nigerian youths should refuse to be agents of thuggery and intimidation for few wads of naira notes at the expense of their future and a better Nigeria. The student union was once a formidable force in the past but it is so unfortunate that politicians now use these students to perpetuate electoral malpractices. Hence this poses the question as to whether we can really bring an end to our powerless state especially when some of us are working agianst our interest.

ST, been a while I have been here. You dont say Utomi stood you up? j/k. yop yop, we should re-direct our feelings of powerlessless into something positive. but there are not enough mentors for youths out there, and most of them spend their days idle, wasting away their lives.
