Is Femi Fani-Kayode a Christian Right-winger? - Mohammed Shomo Sodangi

If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing
-Malcolm X

After taking my time to read Femi Fani-Kayode’s article titled ‘Is Obama the Anti-Christ?’ on a Nigerian national newspaper, I felt compelled to write a rejoinder against it because it is filled with Christian far-right rhetoric, propaganda and agenda devoid of objectivity and rationality, views imported into Nigerian media that can mislead the public in a harmful way. It’s like Mr. Fani-Kayode has been watching Fox News channel on his satellite dish too much and swallowed the conservative ideals hook, line and sinker. He has obviously been brainwashed and also lacks knowledge of American politics.

I believe Mr. Fani-Kayode is a Christian right-winger based on the religious political group views and stances that has reflected in his article, I do not intend to write this article to draw a debate with him seeing that it will be futile but I would like to enlighten the Nigerians on this right-wing group who has hijacked the Republican Party and influence their toxic policies in US that affects the rest of the world negatively for decades but before I start, allow me the chance to explain the American political system that I will use to debunk his implied statements that US is founded as a Christian nation with Christian values seeing that he is criticizing President Barrack Obama for violating the so called ‘Christian values’ and 'faith values’ which I find it silly.

One of the erroneous statements that the Christian right-wingers are fond of asserting or implying is that US is a Christian nation. Contrary to that, USA is founded as a secular country that separates Religion from the state by the founding fathers whom most of them are not orthodox Christians; Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson (who was critical of organized religions), were known as deist. What is Deism? Deism is a belief system that rejects religious knowledge based on revelations such as holy scriptures and supernatural events such as miracles but depends on reason and observation of natural world to determine the existence of a creator, also they don’t believe that God intervenes with the functioning of the natural world but rather allow it to run in accordance with the laws of nature.

Was USA founded as a Christian nation? NO, the first amendment has made it clear that ‘Congress shall make NO law respecting an establishment of religion’. Thomas Jefferson (3rd President of the United States) has wrote to say the 1st amendment made ‘a wall of separation between the church and state’. One of the founding fathers who was the 4th President, James Madison was quoted as saying ‘Strongly guarded…is the separation between religion and government in the constitution of United States’ Not convincing enough? Ok, here is another quote from an International treaty, the treaty of Tripoli drafted in the 1700s that states;

“As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion, as it has in itself no character against the laws, religion or tranquility of Mussulmen (Muslims) and as the said state never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan Nation (Islamic nation) it is declared by both parties that no pretext arising from religion opinions shall ever produce an interpretation of harmony existing between the two countries”

This disproves the implied statements made by Mr. Fani-Kayode that US was founded as Christian nation.

Classical Liberalism has always been the dominant ideology of US ever since it was founded, which Mr. Fani-Kayode is blindly opposing an ideology that espouses Freedom of religion that has been the cornerstone of every secular country that separates religion from the state. It is inane of Mr. Fani-Kayode to criticize President Obama for violating the so called ‘Christian values” which is the subject of criticism that Christian right-wingers love to indulge in, so it’s no surprise that the Former Federal Minister of Aviation is jumping on the bandwagon.

Which brings me to another topic of discussion. Democratic Party which Obama belongs to, position itself as Left-of-center in American politics and supports Modern liberalism while the Republican Party which Governor Romney-the candidate that Mr. Fani-Kayode is endorsing- belongs to, generally positions itself as right-of-center and supports neo-conservative platform.

It is essential for me to shed more light on the Republican Party, a party that has been hijacked by Christian right group whose coattail Mr. Fani-Kayode is hanging on to.

Who are the Christian right-wingers? Christian right wingers are part of a group that support conservative policies and seek to apply Christianity to politics and public policy. Ironic isn’t it? Seeing that the group is violating the first amendment of the United States constitution which Mr. Fani-Kayode fails to understand.

The root of the movement has been dated to back to 1940s and has been influential since 1970s as reactionaries to Sexual and Cultural Revolution that took place as at that time, it started right from the grassroots before it spread over on a national level. Most of the adherents are white conservative evangelical Protestants and they were significant for advancing socially conservative positions on issues (which Mr. Fani Kayode shares and wants to import the values over here via media) as follows;

1. Economics
Christian rights are often in support of laissez-faire economy which they have been parroting and making vogue statements in favour of it, they believe that economy should be left to run on its own without government intervention, history has proved that this theory has never and would never work in practical. This is something that the founding fathers have fought against for fear that they may be dependent on the European monarchs and it has been proven to fail again when the Great Depression occur in the late 1920s and early 1930s, as a result of that Keynesian economics was introduced. Despite all that, the republican Christian right-wingers remained stubborn and try to implement it back during the Bush regime in the 2000s hence the recession and Bush left a huge mess for Obama to clean up.Mr. Fani-Kayode accuses Obama of turning US into “quasi welfarist state where big government reigns and in which the tradition engine room of growth that is known as the American middle class is being systematically weakened and destroyed”.  I don’t know how he came to that conclusion but it’s no surprising that he is following the line of the Christian right group dogmatic views and also forgot that Romney is responsible for the Auto-industry crisis in Detroit which lead to rising unemployment, not to mention that he is outsourcing jobs to China whom he accuses of being a currency manipulator.

2.Middle East and Foreign Policy
It is well known that Israel has a strong support from the group encouraging U.S. government to support and even help them wage war against Iran for possessing nuclear weapon, and also refuse the right of Palestinian state to exist because they are “terrorists”. This is what caused the resentment of America by the Muslim world that birthed extremism and jihadists as reactionaries.

The paradox of the whole issue is that the hatred of Muslims that Christian right winger’s exhibit which Mr. Fani-kayode never fails to do so in public causes the Muslims to be reactive, it has become a ping pong match between the right-wingers and Muslim extremists reacting against each other in hatred. Also Mr. Fani-Kayode, Obama is not responsible for the emergence of Boko Haram in the North.

Also this policy explains the reason why he was being critical of Obama for bowing down to the King of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah, which has been the subject of criticism among the Christian rights in the Republican Party during the first year of Obama’s administration which is weak

Finally this explains why he is trying to allude that Obama is a closet Muslim, also a subject of criticism from the group within the party.

3.Bioethics and Sexuality
Christian rights have opposes abortion, believing that life begins at conception and that abortion is murder, they also opposes the use of contraception based on their religious beliefs which they are trying to impose on American women which also violates their reproductive rights, it’s ridiculous how these clowns are trying to take control of women's womb but can’t take control of the country’s economy. Recently a republican congressman contesting for US senate seat, Todd Akin, who opposes abortion was asked about women who get pregnant due to rape, to the horror of the viewers he claims that "from what he understand from the doctors, it’s really rare and if it’s a legitimate rape, a female body has a way to try to shut things down and avoid a pregnancy!"

It’s no surprising that Mr. Fani-Kayode is critizing President Obama for endorsing women’s right to abortion but he was wrong to accuse him of denouncing ‘right to life’ of unborn babies because he never did so but rather he sees it as a choice left for the women to decide.

These are the positions that Romney/Ryan advocates and are willing to implement those policies should they get elected which explains why Mr. Fani-Kayode is endorsing them because he shares the same principles with them and the group. It’s ironic that he is supporting closet racists and the group who were once against the civil rights movement in the 60s.

It was comical of him to blame President Obama for the occurrence of natural disaster in US which reminds us of Pat Robertson, an American televangelist, also a renowned Christian right-winger who claimed that Hurricane Katrina was “God’s Punishment” in response to America’s abortion policy and he also claim that Haiti’s founders had sworn a “pact with the devil” in order to liberate themselves from the French slave owners and attributed the 2010 Haiti’s earthquake as a consequence of Haitian being cursed for rebelling against their masters in the 19th century. Obviously Mr. Fani-Kayode is taking a leaf from him.

It’s quite alarming how the former minister compare Obama with Hitler who massacred the Jews in a concentration and almost eliminated the whole ethnic group and it’s also unfortunate that he is endorsing Romney/Ryan whom intends to cut social benefits for the American masses, cut taxes for the wealthy class and corporations just to increase military expenditure to launch more wars in the future.

This is enough for me to believe that Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode is a Christian right-winger who intends to mislead the public with falsehood and defamations on President Barrack Obama with a typical rhetoric borrowed from the group and also a pathological attention seeker who will do anything irrational to seek relevance.

I WILL EAT WHAT I WANT by Donald Molosi

I WILL EAT WHAT I WANT

Driving from Phikwe, the mining town where we lived, to our home village of Mahalapye in Eastern Botswana, my face was always pressed against the back window. I was fond of watching greener-than-green mophane trees dotted with women’s brightly colored headscarves. The women in the trees were from nearby villages close to the big road and they were shaking mophane caterpillars off tree branches to the ground for harvest. Despite being an inquisitive child I could only squirm at the thought of eating these tough yellow and green caterpillars, and so eventually I would extract my face from the window.

Today I do not live in Botswana but I encounter many Western tourists who have explored Botswana and one way for them to lament my lack of exoticness is always to tell me, very seriously, that mophane caterpillars are a Botswana delicacy. And truth be told, I was willing to try mophane before but now that they are litmus for Tswana authenticity even to BaTswana themselves (thanks to poisonous Western travel literature) I have no desire to snack on the lovely caterpillar.

The African’s palate is always called only “cultural” and his taste understood as only “tribal” thereby leaving no room for the African’s individual taste. So, I write now of the truth that I am a proud MoTswana man but I will not force himself to eat mophane caterpillars. Simply because they have thorns growing from their body.

HELP SUJITHA GET TO KENYA

Sujitha, a niece of Bill Hess, (my friend and cat lover from Alaska  who raised life saving money for my cats neuter in 2009)  intends to take a trip to Kenya soon in honour of her late sister Sandy. Sandy's parting was particularly sad as she ended her own life after the tragic accident that claimed her husband's life. Moving on has not been easy  for Sujitha since Sandy's passing. One thing that has kept Sujitha going in the midst of turbulence emotions is the remebrance of the kindness of her sister to others. Her devotion to helping everyone. Sujitha has decided to make a trip to Kenya where she will be helping orphans with HIV infections at Nyumbani's children's home.

Dearest Friends,
I pray this email reaches as many as possible and I hope each one of you will take an action: either to donate or forward this to your family and friends.
For everybody who knows me, you will easily get why I am doing this. For others - just trust the person who has forwarded this to you. He/she is definitely my friend and knows me well.

Past: I have always been emotional and since my childhood I remember giving alms to everyone on the street. Maybe I picked this up from my sister who would have learned it from my mum. I remember not taking change from vegetable vendors on the street because I felt deeply for their poverty. When my Doctor aunt started living with us, I used to visit her clinic every evening and was deeply moved by her nature – how she helped her patients who could not afford to give her a mere 5 or 10 rupees. This was in the early 90's.

Present: Things changed when I started my college and never took part in any volunteer services. My sister, on the other hand, devoted her life to helping others. She worked with many NGO's and her dream was to build an old age home. Then the accident happened. I lost my sister and brother-in-law. Then things changed even more. I started looking at her work and understood that it went deeper even than I had realized - she touched people’s lives in many different ways. She was born to serve – not only people, but creatures big and small. So many times she stopped to pick up cats and dogs hit by cars or trucks on the busy streets of Bangalore. She even broke taboo to rescue an electrocuted crow! This is how my sister was and if she were still alive I am sure she would be caring for a cat or dog she had recently rescued even now, at the very moment I type this.

Future: The time has now come for me to help make my sister’s dreams come true. I am motivated – more so than I have ever been before. I am honored to announce that I have been accepted into a volunteer program at the Nyumbani Children's Home in Kenya. Please have a look at their website here:
This is where my heart belongs. This is what I want to do. As my sister always did, I want to help others.
am currently raising funds to get me to Kenya and to help support the work I will be involved in at the children’s home. My sincere request to all of you is to please share this with your friends you trust. I have been asked to come down in early November* or anytime I am ready. I am ready now.  (New target date: April).
I know many of you are already doing things elsewhere and this might come as an unexpected expense. But please do spare whatever you can from your savings and transfer it to my account details below. A generous contribution of even 1000Rs will help greatly – about $18.00, but why not round it out to $20?

Below are some details I have taken from the website to help you understand the expenses we need for the future of Nyumbani children:
As you might imagine, meeting the medical, educational and daily living needs of each child requires significant financial resources.  Each month it costs approximately $11,000 for general maintenance including salaries to operate the children’s home. Within the Nyumbani community, here are some of our monthly expenses:
• General costs to cover basic needs (e.g., food, shelter, clothing) are  $250 per month for each child
• Medical attention for each child (e.g., general check ups, lab work, immunizations, sick visits) is  $30 per month for each child
• Medication, excluding ARV medications is $50 per month for each child
• Educational needs (e.g., public school fees, books, uniforms) are approximately $99 per month for each child in Secondary School and $ 20 per month per child in Primary School.
• Cottage expenses (e.g., school supplies, cleaning materials, staff support) are approximately $225 per month ...

Once you have done this, rest assured that you have brought a smile to a kid’s face and touched his and her life in your own way, whereever you are , whoever you are.  You will make a difference.
Thank You,
Suji

She needs about £900 for this trip. To put a smile of the face of these orphans and to feel close to her sister whose act of kindness lives on. Bill has now opened a pay pal for her. Pls donate if you believe in putting a smile on the face of others... For the donation button and details kindly click http://www.logbookwasilla.com/logbookwasilla/2012/10/25/sujithas-own-words-on-why-she-has-volunteered-to-work-at-the.html

52 YEARS OF NIGERIA’S INDEPENDENCE; HOW HEALTHY ARE WE? By Priscilla Ikos Usiobaifo

Honourable Chairman,
The leader of the Legislative and Hon. members of Akoko Edo Legislative Council,
Royal Fathers here present,
All other protocols duely observed.
My name is Priscilla Usiobaifo. I work with the BraveHeart Initiative for Youth & Women. I welcome you all to the commemoration of Nigeria’s 52nd Independence.

I initiated the BraveHeart Initiative (BHI) at age 18 when I came to a cross road on the numerous challenges faced by young people. I needed a change and I was tired of waiting for the empty promises made by the older generation. Over the years BraveHeart Initiative have executed projects on various issues ranging from sensitization on Sexually Transmitted Infections such as Hiv/Aids, Gender based violence, Sexual abuse, maternal mortality, International, regional and national agreements, Skills trainings for economic empowerment, capacity building workshops amongst others.

In October 2009, BHI registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission as a youth led, youth focused community based NGO empowering and developing young people between the ages of 10 and 25 years through information and skills training to make informed choices, grow into self actualized adults capable of contributing towards a better society. Overall Goal of BraveHeart Initiative: To improve knowledge and understanding of sexual and reproductive rights among young people in Akoko Edo as a means of achieving gender equality

Objectives:
1.      To improve knowledge and understanding of sexual and reproductive rights among young people in Akoko Edo as a means of reducing teenage pregnancies by 20% in 5 years
2.      To promote community awareness on the rights of young people in order to reduce gender inequality in Akoko Edo.
3.      To facilitate the recovery of abused children, young persons and women from gender based violence.
4.      To partner with likeminded institutions and stakeholders to build the capacity of BHI.
5.      To empower young persons with skills and information to become active participants in development.
6.      To promote the practice of feminist principles among young women in Akoko Edo

Reproductive Health has been defined as: “a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity in all matters relating to the reproductive system and to its functions and processes”. Sexuality is defined as social expressions of one’s social and biological being through mannerism, mode of dressing, interactions patterns and physical intercourse.
Adolescent sexual and reproductive health issues such as unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions and sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS are important concern for youth arising from many factors including inadequate sexual health information, education and poor access to services. Many adolescents are sexually active but are often “extremely uninformed about their reproductive systems. This ignorance, more often than not, lead them to long term damage of their sexual and reproductive health or even death” (Madunagu, 1998:10)

Nigeria is one of the most youthful countries in Africa. According to recent statistics, Adolescent population makes up 22% of the general population in Nigeria. Approximately 35, 326, 000.
Nigeria’s population is estimated at 158, 423, 000. With about 42% of the population lacking improved drinking water resources, 68% of population without access to improved sanitation facilities and about 1, 700,000 of women (aged 15+) living with HIV.

We are at BraveHeart Initiative take cognizant that harmful traditional practices continue to rob young people of their rights to sexual and reproductive health, with girls and young women especially subject to such norms that expose them to sexual violence, female genital mutilation and child marriages; we also concerned that while our country has adopted several laws and policies to protect young people and provide them with services, such laws and policies are often contradictory, have loop holes and are not domesticated and implemented leading to discrimination and limited access to justice for young people.

Today, as we mark our Independence, I call on government and other related agencies to deliberately allocate funds for sexual and reproductive health programmes in line with regional and global commitments including the Abuja Declaration, the Maputo Programme of Action which calls for a minimum allocation of 15% of the national budget to health. Also to ensure evidence-based comprehensive sexuality education for in-and out of school young people through schools, communities, religious and cultural institutions.
I call on parents, communities, religious and traditional leaders to support young people to access and take up sexual and reproductive health information and services, commodities including HIV testing and counseling, contraceptives, Anti Retroviral Therapy and maternal health care. Prioritize the reform and removal of cultural practices and norms that threaten the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people including Child Rape, gender-based violence and other forms of sexual exploitation.

Thank you for your attention,
Priscilla Ikos Usiobaifo
Program Coordinator,
BraveHeart Initiative
