The Amazon Shero: Oreoluwa Somolu

I made an AdaLovelaceDay pledge a few Months ago to do a post on an Amazon in Technology.
" Ada Lovelace Day is an international day of blogging to draw attention to women excelling in technology. Women's contributions often go unacknowledged, their innovations seldom mentioned, their faces rarely recognised. We want you to tell the world about these unsung heroines. Whatever she does, whether she is a sysadmin or a tech entrepreneur, a programmer or a designer, developing software or hardware, a tech journalist or a tech consultant, we want to celebrate her achievements"

This is not far-fetch for me anymore as it would have being a few years back. I am proud of a woman that is making tremendous impact in equipping women and girls in Information and Communication Technology. I was so happy to leave my name in joining over 1,000 people world over that will be blogging or that are already making a post on their "Technology Sheros or the Technology unsung Sheroes".

If not for her intiative to empower women in ICT, my blog that is making an impact and is about to take me to Chicago for a conference won't have existed. If not for her over 50 empowered women and girls that now know more about what they can use ICTs to achieve won't have got that information as at the time they did.

If not for her a lot of women taking charge of their destiny might not be privy to the information that is changing the wheel of their lives! There is so much that one determined person can do, there is so much one genuine leader can accomplish with a passionate heart.

I am acknowledging the deserving Technology Shero, the Amazon Oreoluwa Somolu for all she has done and much more to come!

More than 70% of uni students are females in Malaysia. And considering the boys tend to sit for Islamic studies whereas the girls pick science and technology, we will very soon have a society where boys will be incapable of getting high profile jobs.

As it is, more than half of doctors and nurses and dentists are female in Malaysia today. It's getting quite hard to find a male dentist.

I read that Singapore is exactly the same.

So I guess we will soon see a lot more women in the business and IT sections of newspapers, TV etc.

What's it like where you are? Do you have access to figures at all? If so, I'd love to read about it!

Your tech and cat crazy pal in Malaysia :-)

I've actually never heard of Oreoluwa Shomolu so thanks for the info. Having Nigerian women who are involved in technology and making great impact is indeed a great plus to the women generation and she is sure worth celebrating.

Thanks for doing this. Didn't know. I know the female I should write of...

Is it too late?

Have a safe trip to Chicago, if you have a layover in Washington, DC, Maryland/Virginia, let me know!

Thank you, ST! I'm honoured. There are so many young women who you are also inspiring.

@SolomonSydelle, though the Ada Lovelace Day was Tuesday, I am sure that you can still write something anyway to celebrate a woman you admire.

You know what they say about Chicago - "it's one heck of a town."

And, of course, it is the home of the Cubs.

My youngest daughter will go there just to see the Cubs.

Now, thanks to Oreoluwa, you get to go there, too.

katztales made a very good observation, btw. I think what is happening Malaysia is much more widespread.

The table may be in the process not of evening out, but of reversing itself.

@ Temite: Hmmm she is a woman that has done so much for others and no, it's not me. I am praising her...

@ Tigress: It's July 2009. And be sure that I will ask you so much questions about the place. Thanks dearie

@ Katztales: It's like revolution has started or something. i once told someone that if women are relentless about getting empowered in different fields we will soon have break through... Thansk for sharing this.

@ Kafo: Yes, a good one indeed, will you be partaking in the future ones?

@ Afrobabe: Arent you in USA? I think you can attend the conference too. Check more on this on blogher.com…. Have you changed your blog title?

@ Rita: thanks. You are one rare person too to have purse engineering and still going strong…

@ Poeticallytinted: Yeah!

@ Geebee: How do you find the “H” you put on her surname? Lol. It’s Somolu without the “H”. And thanks a lot this wonderful comment

@ SSD: Thanks for the offer, yes you can still make a post on this. Hmmm, I love the offer of visitng, I actually want to see if I can visit Washington and will let you know…

@ Thanks Mr. Odeleye and say Gbosa! Gbosa! Gbosa!

@ Doja: LOL

The Activist said...

@ Olubunmi: you don’t say. She is all that and much more…

@ Parakeet; Yes, I am happy too. I need to have a chat with you though!

@ GK: the table need not turn really but it will be good to have everyone partake in economic development and its sustainability. It’s all about all hands being on deck cuz if the table turns, then we will start men’s empowerment too (lol). You are making me like Chicago already..

@ Buttercup: it’s in July 2009

My Passion, my focus, the change that I want to see in the world - is my propellent factor.
