I will just copy and paste this story as it was told on BBC. I am lost for words here and I wonder how this could have happened.
Nigerian advises against 86 wives
By Andrew Walker
BBC News, Bida, Nigeria |
Mr Bello Abubakar says he does not go and find women, they come to him
|
Nigerian Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, has advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women.
The former teacher and Muslim preacher, who lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, says he is able to cope only with the help of God. "A man with 10 wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them," he told the BBC. He says his wives have sought him out because of his reputation as a healer. "I don't go looking for them, they come to me. I will consider the fact that God has asked me to do it and I will just marry them." But such claims have alienated the Islamic authorities in Nigeria, who have branded his family a cult.
"When you marry a man with 86 wives you know he knows how to look after them"
Wife Ganiat Bello Abubakar

Most Muslim scholars agree that a man is allowed to have four wives, as long as he can treat them equally. But Mr Bello Abubakar says there is no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives. "To my understanding the Koran does not place a limit and it is up to what your own power, your own endowment and ability allows," he says. "God did not say what the punishment should be for a man who has more than four wives, but he was specific about the punishment for fornication and adultery." 'Order from God'As Mr Bello Abubakar emerged from his compound to speak to the BBC, his wives and children broke out into a praise song.
Some of Mr Bello Abubakar's wives are younger than some of his children
|
Most of his wives are less than a quarter of his age - and many are younger than some of his own children. The wives the BBC spoke to say they met Mr Bello Abubakar when they went to him to seek help for various illnesses, which they say he cured. "As soon as I met him the headache was gone," says Sharifat Bello Abubakar, who was 25 at the time and Mr Bello Abubakar 74. "God told me it was time to be his wife. Praise be to God I am his wife now." Ganiat Mohammed Bello has been married to the man everyone calls "Baba" for 20 years. When she was in secondary school her mother took her for a consultation with Mr Bello Abubakar and he proposed afterwards. "I said I couldn't marry an older man, but he said it was directly an order from God," she says. She married another man but they divorced and she returned to Mr Bello Abubakar. "I am now the happiest woman on earth. When you marry a man with 86 wives you know he knows how to look after them," she said. No work Mr Bello Abubakar and his wives do not work and he has no visible means of supporting such a large family.
Many of the wives live three to a room, some have seven children
|
He refuses to say how he makes enough money to pay for the huge cost of feeding and clothing so many people. Every mealtime they cook three 12kg bags of rice which all adds up to $915 (£457) every day. "It's all from God," he says. Other residents of Bida, the village where he lives in the northern Nigerian state, say they do not know how he supports the family. According to one of his wives, Mr Bello Abubakar sometimes asks his children to go and beg for 200 naira ($1.69, £0.87), which if they all did so would bring in about $290 (£149). Most of his wives live in a squalid, unfinished house in Bida; others live in his house in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital. He refuses to allow any of his family or other devotees to take medicine and says he does not believe that malaria exists.
"They were sick and we told God and God said their time has come"
Wife Hafsat Bello Abubakar

"As you sit here if you have any illness I can see it and just remove it," he says.
But not everyone can be cured and one of his wives, Hafsat Bello Mohammed, says two of her children have died."They were sick and we told God and God said their time has come." She says that most of the wives see Mr Bello Abubakar as next in line from the Prophet Muhammad. Indeed, he claims the Prophet Muhammad speaks to him personally and gives detailed descriptions of his experiences. It is a serious claim for a Muslim to make. "This is heresy, he is a heretic," says Ustaz Abubakar Siddique, an imam of Abuja's Central Mosque.

Yeepa! 86 wives! i agree with fff...very disgusting! How can some women be so gullible? Have they been jinxed?
Omg....i am speechless
Read the story first on Solomonsydelle's then in This Day. I think there's more to the guy than meets the eye.
As per having 86 wives, me I have no problem with that - if he can take care of them. But this story about sending them out to beg is new to me. Besides, the story says the man looks younger than a 60-year old, so he must be doing something right.
@Afro: That was my own thot too because I don't see why women will flock to a man who has no money. But then with the pervading poverty, it is no surprise that they do. At least they call him 'husband' even if he may not touch them in a year.
i wonder how many years it took him too know all his wives and children both by name and face.from the pix i saw, some of the women are not bad looking so one would wonder what then they are doing been wife numer 70,79 80 blahblah.oh i forgot, its an injuction from above-yeah right!
Is this some kind of fiction? Standtall, If na joke stop am o!

Dunno what to say. The dude must be a randy stud and the women must be as dumb as doorknobs. I pity the poor kids though who had no choice in the matter.

I bet he only slept with some of them just once.
i remember reading this in one of the dailies a while ago.
there is obviously more to this story than meets the eye.
I just hate it when everyone uses God as a coverup for all their atrocities.

Dis is sum crious nymphomaniac o! haba..shebi he thinkz he's the next king solomon.. HISS!
Wow!!!
My own great, great, great, grandfather was a Mormon polygamist who had seven wives and 63 children. My grandma was born into a polygamist family with two wives and when she was 16, she was promised to another 65 year-old polygamist, but she ran away and married my grandfather, to be his only wife.
I am very proud of her for that.
"As you sit here if you have any illness I can see it and just remove it," huh????
i dont even know what to say...WOW...
in the words of a fellow blogger....what fu*K*ry is this!!!!Dont know which is worse..the man or the foolish 86 women that married him!!!! Gosh...i'm lost for words.....but angry at the same time. Surely there most be a law against such nonsence!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey there StandTall!
{waves}
I see that you are busy over here at your blog!!
I think that this is OUTRAGEOUS! Many American women do not understand how prevalent black polygamy is in other countries....
{shaking my head}
If young girls believe that it is a way of life then they will never shun it and expect more for their lives.
Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!

greed and lust...leads one man to 86 wives...please God in this day and age...his problem is not only that of heresy
OMG.. ."As soon as I met him the headache was gone," says Sharifat Bello Abubakar, who was 25 at the time and Mr Bello Abubakar 74”. If Sherifat used Ibuprofen, the result will also be the same... Gosh I seriously refuse to believe this is a 25 years old girl talking.. are u kidding me?
“I said I couldn't marry an older man, but he said it was directly an order from God," she says.” _ did he use Juju on her? Cause i don’t get it. I guess the lyrics trip her abi?
“"They were sick and we told God and God said their time has come." _ I guess she believes this to console herself?
LOL. Hahahahahaha. Well, who needs Tylenol when you have Abubakar? LOL @ "some" of his wives being younger than "some" of his children. Hehehehe.
Oh, goodness.
Omase O! It's stories like this that make oyinbo people think that we are all backward in Africa.
Have you checked if you belong to the Solomonsydelle sect on my blog?
I read this in a 9ja newspaper, i think it was Thisday, honestly i won't say i'm suprised at all, wat fecking annoys me is the fact that BBC has a more detailed report than a 9ja newspaper. Na wa, then again why i'm i annoyed, didn't CNN break the news of the bomb blast 6yrs ago b4 the media in this country even had a clue wat was happening!!!
the first time i saw this online i was shocked. how does he get to feed them is my first question? is it jazz? cuz how can 86 women be so blind and stupid...... oh well, we never know
thats just disgusting!!!
What is wrong with his women? enh?
"When you marry a man with 86 wives you know he knows how to 'brain-wash' (oops, look after) them." It baffles me though.
RE: And why do u think it is "ere kere" for Vera to be under AlooFar? ehn?
In my own opinion, the man should be arrested. The reasons for the arrest are not far fetched.
He unnaturally married 86 wives. That is "women kidnapping".
He orders the children to beg. That is "child Abuse".
He left some children to die carelessly. That is "euthenasia".
And he claims to be a religious leader. That is "impersonation" and "hyprocrisy". So, I recommend LIFE IMPRISONMENT.
I think whenever a man has that many wives, he really doesn't have not one. That's insane, but I don't judge because I understand it's culture.
Hi all, sorry it took me this long before replying your comments. I have being busy. This is not a reply per se but my take.
I dont think any culture permits any man to have endless number of wives. I dont even see this act as being natural taking to account of the man being an healer. Either the women were brainwashed or jinxed. This man has further contributed to the earth problem by giving birth to children he cannot cater for. Let's wait for wife 87!!! It's sad and unblelievable
saw this on newsline, all i can say is crazy
Sick.....just sick!!!
which kind thing be this now?
WAOH!! NICE BLOG...I BE IFAKO-BASED TOO
Hillarious, LMAO... Only in Naija. "Ignorance is indeed bliss",
