The V- Monologue 2009 Performances

Is this fair?
A Saudi Arabian court has sentenced a 75-year-old Syrian woman to 40 lashes, four months imprisonment and deportation from the kingdom for having two unrelated men in her house, according to local media reports. Read full report here

2009 Vagina Monologue Play:

I went for V-Monologue play this year just like I did last year. Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND) has being responsible for this play since 2006. The Vagina Monologues is a play to raise awareness on violence against women and funds for organisations with intiatives working to end violence against women.

The original play was written and produced by Eve Ensler's and was adapted by different countries all over the world since violence against women is common place and not perculiar to a particular region or country. KIND started the play in 2006 using Eve's book until 2008 when they think it's important to tell the story using Nigeria issues on violence against women after the research that involved the interview of 150 Nigerian women that narrated one form of violence or the other perpetrated on them.

It's a good thing to show case these issues via a stage performance for awareness raising, moblization, funding raising, the victory of those that dare to challenge the unfair treatments, the warriors as well as the victims. I believe that true continous and ceaseless efforts by different groups, organisations and individuals, violence against women will be a thing of the past. Soon, I believe soon...

All images from the V-Monologue seeing on this post are credited to Isaac EmokpeaTHE SCENE ABOVE WAS FROM "SLICE $ DICE" FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION.
THE SCENE ABOVE WAS FROM " HE HITS ME" WITH ALL THE ACTORS MENTIONING DIFFERENT ORDEAL THEY HAVE SUFFERED FROM MEN/HUSBAND.

THIS SCENE WAS TELLING A STORY OF HOW THE YOUNG LADY WAS BEING TOUCHED BY MEN ANYTIME SHE WAS SENT ON ERRAND UNTIL SHE LEARNT TO DEFEND HERSELF

THE FOOTBALLERS ACTING HOW SOMEN MEN DEAL BLOWS TO WOMEN AS IF THEY ARE FOOTBALLS WHILE PRAISING THOSE MEN THAT RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN
THE PERFORMERS ABOUT TO TAKE A BOW AND LEAVE THE STAGE

The play must have been real interesting, judging from the pictures!
Women need to stand up and protect themselves against abuse...as for the 75-year old Syrian being deported, you just got to love the way those people think. SMH.

I would love to see that play...wonder if they do one in uk, will look it up

As per the 75year old womans story...don't even know what to say. Its quite clear, the saudi judiaciary system has no regard for women. Its really realy sad.

looks like a play that would make me cry.
I've read and heard about it before but I thank you so much for bringing it up to remind me. I really need to watch it.

The story from Saudi Arabia is yet again disturbing. I wonder when that country will stop its extreme abuse of women. Women can't even drive and will get arrested if they do as much as show their wrist! The rule they have that you have to have 4 witnesses to rape is also just ABSURD! What can we do about it? Other than participating in Amnesty International, avaaz.org etc...

Ohh la la! I was so engrossed, I couldn't take pictures. You captured my favorite parts. The He Hits me and the Football scene. I had a good laugh with the visitor thing.

I think its one of the best 2 1/2 hrs I have ever spent.

@ Blogoratti: The play was really impactful. I wish I could go to Saudi and scream " are you people mad?"

@ Wordmerchant: I dont know if there is an org. doing VM in the UK. I will try and find otu if I can. Saudi Sharia law saddens me.

@ Doja: I wonder why these laws still exist especially when a lot of their men would go and watch fashion show seing naked models and all...

@ Bumight: are you sure they arent showing it where you are?

Wow.. the seems like a good initiative. (Esp. after I finally got my head around and un-distracted from the name).
About the Saudi woman...pray tell, how many lashes did they give the "unrelated men"? Nonsense!!

waow- Standtall u are fantastic. U make me aware of things that i'm totally clueless about. This play seems very interesting. I would love to see it.

As for the 75 year old woman thats very disheartening. Reminds me of the little boy whose punishment for stealing was for them to drive a car over his hand. Bible kuku says the heart of man is deceitful and desperately wicked.

You have a movement going on. And, except for venues such as this, we in the west are basically ignorant of it, as things that people are doing to stand up and make changes do not get much play in the western media - although we do hear about how tough things can be for women in your part of the world.

We just don't hear much about what women themselves are doing about it.

You have opened up a whole new window to me.

Wow thanks standtall. A few of my friend mentioned they were going to see this play but for the life of me I couldnt understand what the whole thing was all about. Am glad its for a good cause and most pple are interested.

That right there is so wrong. Why will they do that to her? Was she sexing both men? But at the same time, that is their tradition no matter how sick. Vagina monologues huh? I wouldn't be able to tell from the name how educative it is. Don't judge a book by its cover abi? lol

Man! I wonder do they have that play over here..I'll search it. Now that's interesting yet heartbreaking at the sametime cuz it's real.
And for that 75yr lady, dang, that's jacked up! Regardless of the crime, they need to respect the AGE! She's an elder! They need to find another punishment..

The Activist said...

@ Sleekiest: Lol at the distraction. About the Saudi woman, I doubt if they did anything to the men…

@ Tigress: Thanks Tigress. I just do know when people will wake up to the fact that 2 wrongs don’t make a right. Besides why cant the woman have unrelated men in her home?

@ FBA: Yeah. I was secretly looking out for Bimbo Akintola and kate Henshaw this year but they weren’t there

@ Vera Ikeji: Very true

@ GK: Thank GK wait till I get to Alaska, hope I make it down. We shall have a lot of cross culture discussions

@ Parakeet: Thanks. Hope you get to see it some day

BIBI:That's what the play is trying to say, the fact that we think that vagina is not about something serious and as a matter of fact is who we are. Is about talking about you as a person and all you have being true as a woman. No vagina no babies, no vagina no sex, no vagina no woman. I tell you it's very educative. Abt the Saudi woman, it was not about whether she had sex with them it's about having them in her house in the first place.

@ Lady A: If you are in Nigeria you will be able to see the play about this time next year. Abt the old lady, must they really punish her at all. How is it an offence that an adult has members of opposite sex at her house? It all boils down to lack of respect for women's rights

It looks like it would be a nice play to see yeah?
